The artwork looks like two masks - like the theater masks - one is supposed to be anger (red) and the other is supposed to be happiness (blue). The background is gray to be neutral and they are tied together with the ribbons that normally keep the mask on your face.
To make this, I drew the outline first. Then, I made the masks with oil pastel. Next, I painted the background. Finally, I added layers of color into the eyes. The goal of this artwork was to show how emotions are like a mask but they are all connected. I picked the theater masks because of the saying "a mask of emotions." This artwork worked but it wasn't exactly how I wanted to convey the message. If I were to do something different, I would have a person holding the masks instead of just the masks. The last few weeks we've been working on our final artwork on Identity. We also practiced portrait drawing. In portrait drawing, we watched some videos on how to draw portraits. I can reflect on my ability to see what I can improve on in portrait drawing. I'm not going an artist for the rest of my life but it doesn't hurt to try to be a better drawer. I'm envisioning ideas for my identity artwork. My artwork is going to be able how we act, like wearing masks, to keep our emotions hidden.
In the last two weeks we finished Postmodern Principles and started Memory. The idea I'm envisioning for my memory artwork is to make a room from my Grandma's house from when I was playing with my brother. I want to stretch and explore with materials. I'm making a 3D paper room.
For my Postmodern Principle artwork, I was using Text and Image. I have bunch of random words and phrases with a police box. The the background is full of cut up book pages. The words and phrases and police box are from "Doctor Who." The cut up book pages are also a reference to "Doctor Who." My big idea was to use juxtaposition but it didn't work because I couldn't figure out how to use juxtaposition with my ideas so I changed it to Text and Image. In the end it turned out great.
The last few weeks I've been working on my Postmodern Principles artwork. My plan is to use words and images from Dr. Who. I collaged the background, drew the Tardis using a ruler looking at an image that I looked up, and took a couple of quotes from the show to hang off the edge of the artwork. I've had to use engage and persist because I messed up the letters a bunch of times but I turned it into something else and just went with it. I also had to use Stretch & Explore by trying new things together.
My artwork is a drawing of a flag attached to a tower on a castle. You see part of a castles tower on the right side of the page. The flag is in the center. Off to the left near the bottom you see a little village. On the flag is the Apple symbol. I started with black paper and used pencil to outline and chalk pastel for color. I picked Apple because it seems like it's been around forever and that's why I put the logo on a flag on a castle. I wanted to use appropriation in my art - I appropriated the Apple symbol and put it somewhere else where it wouldn't normally be seen. I feel great about my art - it actually turned out!
In the last two weeks we have done Artist Steal. I used stretch and explore - I used the chalk pastels in a new way. I have always used them on lighter paper but for this artwork I used dark paper to get a different color look. I also used express - I'm showing how long that Apple have been around kind of like castles. Another viewer might interpret it differently, but that was my idea.
In the Last two weeks we have done a candy still life and brainstorm ideas for another still life. One of the ideas that I have is to draw a can of of Pepsi with my headphones.
As an artist, I am a beginner, I'm not that good. In other art classes I liked sculpture. In this class I hope to learn different techniques for drawing. I already draw things I like to draw but I want a challenge.
